PURDUE UNIVERSITY SPIRIT SQUAD
The Purdue University spirit squad is a highly visible and enthusiastic athletic group on campus with a primary purpose to support Intercollegiate Athletics and serve as ambassadors for Purdue University.
Purdue University spirit squad can be seen at all home/away football games, home volleyball games and home men & women's basketball games. Away games/tournaments offer great travel opportunities, including post-season bowl games for football and NCAA basketball tournaments.
Recent trips include the 2007 Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Michigan (Football); Men's NCAA First Round/Second Round tournament in Washington ,DC, Women's NCAA Basketball First/Second Round ( Hosted by Purdue University)
Purdue Spirit Squad has been seen on ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN CollegeGame Day, ESPNU,ESPN2, ESPN Cold Pizza, Fox Sports Network, American Cheerleader magazine and the Big TEN Network, Big Ten Friday Night Lights, Big Ten Game Day Show
Program members are well supported student-athletes at Purdue University. Expenses directly associated with being a member of the spirit program are supported by Intercollegiate Athletics Department. The Nike company is the official sponsor of the spirit program and members of the spirit program receive practice gear, warm-ups, travel gear and shoes from Nike. Uniforms, poms and megaphones are provided by Varsity Brands. Additional services: All items checked out to the student athlete can be laundered by our equipment manager. Squad members are also issued lockers in Mackey Arena to store thier personal items.
Squad members are full time students at Purdue University pursuing thier undergraduate degree. High school seniors are eligible to tryout in the spring of their senior year once they have been admitted to the University. All members must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA while a member of the Purdue Spirit Program. Student-athlete's have academic advisors assigned to them while at Purdue through our student-athlete academic learning center where assistance is provided in scheduling classes in persuit of thier degree.
A new computer center with Internet capabilities is housed in the learning center. Tutoring is provided for student athlete's. Incoming freshman are required to attend (4) hours a week study tables in the academic learning center. Grade checks are recorded each semester.
Athletic training staff is present at all official sporting events for the safety of squad members. The main training room is located in Mackey Arena, where program members go for any sports related issues. First-class care is provided by top athletic trainers and doctors with state-of-the art equipment.
The Purdue Spirit Program always striving to be a top notch program is a major commitment both time and effort. Cheerleaders practice five times a week. Practice sessions focus on co-ed partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, tumbling. Cheerleaders work in preparation for games, special events and competition. Sqaud members also workout under the direction of a strength and conditioning coach during the year.
Games/Events occurre over the summer and hoilday breaks which squad members attend so hoilday planning is very important.
Purdue attends NCA college cheer camp at the University of Louisville Aug 2-4, 2008
Purdue attends NCA Cheer and Dance Nationals in early April, this trip in part is funded by the Intercollegiate Athletic department.
