Big Ten Directors of Athletics approved a recommendation of the sports information directors to establish a Big Ten Athlete of the Year beginning in 1982. The following year, the Directors of Athletics approved a separate athlete of the year award for women's athletics. In 1991-92, the women's award was renamed the "Big Ten - Suzy Favor" Athlete of the Year award, as part of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of women's athletics in the Conference. Each university selects its male and female "Athletes-of-the-Year" and they become candidates for the conference award. The Purdue selections are as follows

Mackey Award
Established in 1971 in honor of the late Purdue Director of Athletics, this award recognizes athletes who exemplify the overall success of the University's intercollegiate athletic programs.
Guy "Red" Mackey devoted nearly a century to Purdue athletics and served as athletic director from 1942 until his death in 1971. He began his Purdue career as an outstanding football player in 1926 following his graduation in 1929 and joined the Purdue staff as an assistant football coach. He also served as head wrestling coach and in various administrative posts until being named athletic director in 1942.
His accomplishments were legendary during his career, but the inspiration for this award stemmed from the leadership, loyality, integrity and concern for others which marked each day of his life.
Squad members from each of Purdue's 17 intercollegiate teams are eligible to be nominated by their teammates for this award. The criteria for nomination incilude "competitive spirit and positive attitude," "loyality and self-discipline," "hardwork for the best interest of the team" and "a willingness to help others".
At the completion of the intercollegiate athletic season each spring a committee of lettewinners select three of the nominees to receive the scholarship award for post-graduate study or completion of their degrees. The award is maintained through contribution made by P-Club members.
Women athletes became eligible for the award in 1979 and the number of scholarship winners was increased from two to three.
Following is a list of the nominees with scholarship winners designated by an asterick (*).
