WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Senior outside hitter Ariel Turner added another honor to her already impressive resumé on Tuesday as she was named to the AVCA All-Mideast Region team making her eligible for All-America honors. Turner was a first team All-America honoree in 2011.
In 2012, the Highlands Ranch, Colo., native has received unanimous All-Big Ten honors and Academic All-District accolades and was tabbed as a Senior CLASS Award finalist, while also garnering AVCA National Player of the Week and three Big Ten Player/Defensive Player of the Week nods. Turner is averaging 4.42 kills per set and 5.07 points per set, ranking 16th and 13th nationally, while ranking first and second in the Big Ten respectively. The senior became part of an exclusive group of seven Boilermakers last weekend, joining the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig club when she recorded her 1,000th dig in the NCAA First Round match against Colorado State. The outside hitter has led the Boilermakers in kills 29 times, while posting 27 double-digit efforts. She also has added 2.71 digs per set, including 17 double-digit performances and six team-leading efforts. The senior has put up 15 kills/digs double-doubles, while also adding 81 blocks and 28 aces. She served up a career-best seven aces at Cincinnati, which ranks tied for fourth in Purdue history and tied for third in a four-set match. Turner also has aided the team in serve receive, making good on 94 percent of her 337 chances.
Turner was an AVCA first team All-America honoree in 2011, while also earning second team Capital One Academic All-America second team honors, making her Purdue volleyball's first dual All-America recipient since 1984.She also earned Big Ten Player of the Year accolades, the first for Purdue since 1985.
Turner is now eligible for AVCA All-America honors, which will be announced at the Final Four in Louisville, Ky., next week. The senior also is on the ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors and is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, which also will announce their honorees in Louisville.
Turner and the Boilermakers continue their 2012 season at 7 p.m. Friday when they take on No. 11 Minnesota at the NCAA Regional Semifinal in Mackey Arena. All-session tickets for Friday and Saturday's West Lafayette Regional are on sale now
