WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Senior middle hitter Stephanie Lynch added another accolade to her already highly decorated career as she was named as a unanimous selection to the 13 player All-Big Ten team as announced by the conference on Monday. The honor is the third straight for Lynch, who also received first team all-region and honorable mention All-America acclaim in both 2006 and 2007.
Lynch is averaging 3.45 kills per set on a .409 hitting effort, while also posting 1.42 blocks per set this season. The .409 hitting efficiency ranks her seventh nationally, while the blocks tally ranks 10th nationally. In conference play, the New Albany, Ind., native tallied 3.36 kills per set on a team-best .392 hitting effort, while racking up 1.47 blocks per set. Lynch was a preseason All-Big Ten selection and was named Big Ten Player of the Week four times during the season. The senior garnered offensive honors on Sept. 15 and Oct. 20, while earning defensive honors on Nov. 17 and Dec. 1.
Lynch became the Purdue record holder in block assists and total blocks this season, smashing the previous marks boosting her tallies to 528 and 636 respectively. She has posted 152 block assists thus far in 2008, surpassing the previous season record of 148. Lynch posted a season-best 13 blocks (one solo, 12 assists) against Wisconsin, Nov. 29 to move her ahead of Debbie Leeman's mark of 148 from the 1986 season.
She has posted double-digit kill tallies 23 times, including 20 or more four times. The senior has led the team in blocks 23 times and in kills on 17 occasions. She has registered a hitting percentage of .300 or better 28 times, a hitting percentage of .400 or better 19 times and hitting percentage above .500 seven times.
Among conference players in 2008, Lynch ranks second in blocks per set, fourth in hitting percentage, sixth in points per set (4.34) and seventh in kills per set. In Big Ten play, she ranks fourth in hitting percentage (.392), fourth in blocks per set with 1.47 stuffs per stanza, seventh in points per set (4.26) and eighth in kills per set (3.36).
During the non-conference season, Lynch was named MVP of the Utah Classic and Dayton Flyer Invitational and garnered all-tournament team honors at the Mortar Board Premier and Active Ankle Challenge.
The Boilermakers (24-8) continue their season on Friday when they take on the Louisville Cardinals in the NCAA Tournament first round.
