WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue was well represented when the All-Big Ten honors were announced on Nov. 29, including some historic awards as Ariel Turner was named Big Ten Player of the Year and head coach Dave Shondell was tabbed as Big Ten Coach of the Year. Middle blocker Tiffany Fisher was named as a unanimous All-Big Ten selection and Kierra Jonesearned All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors.

Junior outside hitter Ariel Turner became Purdue's first Big Ten Player of the Year selection since 1985 (Marianne Smith) when she garnered the accolade on Nov. 29. Head coach Dave Shondellwas tabbed as Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the media and the league's coaches, marking Purdue's first Coach of the Year selection since Hall of Famer Carol Dewey (1982, 1985, 1987).

Turner and senior middle blocker Tiffany Fisher were named as unanimous All-Big Ten selections, marking the first time Purdue has boasted two first team selections since Debbie McDonald and Linda Reichl in 1987. The selections are the 49th and 50th in program history. All-American setter Jaclyn Hart was a unanimous selection in 2010 as was All-America middle blocker Stephanie Lynchin 2008.

Rookie middle blocker Kierra Jones was named to the seven-person all-freshman team as well. Jones' honor is the third straight for the Boilermakers, following Turner inn 2009 and Catherine Rebarchakin 2010, and makes her the eighth Boilermaker rookie to earn the honor since 2000.

Turner was a five-time Big Ten Player of the Week in 2011 and also earned AVCA National Player of the Week on Nov. 1. The Academic All-District and Academic All-Big Ten selection ranks in the top five nationally in points per set and kills per set, leading the Big Ten in both categories. She is averaging 4.92 kills, while also adding 2.76 digs per set, second most on the team.

Fisher, who also was a Preseason All-Big Ten selection, ranks 15th nationally in hitting percentage, with a Big Ten and team-best .391 mark. The senior is averaging 2.45 kills and 1.00 blocks per set in 30 starts.

Jones, who was a three-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week and two-time Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, ranks 38th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten with a team-best 1.24 blocks per set. The rookie also averages 1.42 kills per set, while hitting .358. She has led the team in blocks 15 times in 2011.

The eighth-ranked 2011 Boilermakers, which were picked to finish fourth in the league, have posted a 27-4 mark thus far, including a 16-4 conference record, good for second place in the Big Ten. The 27 wins and 16 conference victories are the most for the program since 1985, while the second place Big Ten finish is Purdue's best since 1987. Purdue's current No. 8 ranking is its highest since 1983 (7th).
