By fan vote, Sherridan Atkinson has claimed her second national honor of the week. This is her third honor total this week as she was named Big Ten Player of the Week, VolleyMob National Player of the Week and now Division I Volleyball HERO of the Week by HERO Sports.
The accolade recognizes her individual performance in Purdue's four-set upset over No. 5 Minnesota prior to the Boilermakers upsetting No. 10 Wisconsin in straight sets nearly 24 hours later. The redshirt junior out of Long Beach, California, led the Boilermakers with 20.5 points against the Golden Gophers, fueled by 17 kills, a .293 hitting percentage an ace and four blocks complemented by eight digs.
She led an offense that picked apart one of the best defensive units in the Big Ten entering the weekend. Minnesota was ranked third in the league, holding opponents to a .180 hitting percentage this season. The The Gophers blocked 2.62 balls per set as well to own the league's fourth best average and began the match with the conference's top digs per set average of 16.51.
Altogether the Boilermakers out-hit the Gophers .317 to .234 and registered the most kills recorded in a match this season by a Big Ten program with 75 on the night.
