WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Junior outside hitter Danita Merlau was honored for her work in the classroom when she was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V second team on Thursday.

Merlau, a communications major, was one of 12 student-athletes named to the two Academic All-District V teams. The District V accolade is the second straight for the New Palestine, Ind., native, who received second team honors last season as well.

The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree received all-tournament team honors at the Duke Invitational and the Big Orange Bash earlier this season. Merlau is averaging 3.69 kills and 3.10 digs per game and has led the Boilermaker offense in kills 10 times. She has posted double-digit kills in 20 of Purdue's 25 matche and tallied double-doubles in 14 matches.

Merlau, a communications major, is one of three Big Ten volleyball players to be named to the Academic All-District V teams.

The Boilermakers (14-11, 7-7 Big Ten) are begin a four-match homestand on Friday when they welcome the Iowa Hawkeyes to the IAF. Purdue will face Iowa at 7 p.m. Friday, before taking on the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. Saturday.
