Oct. 24, 2007

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - November 24 will mark the last regular-season match for the 2007 Purdue volleyball team, but thousands of miles away it will mark a first for former Boilermaker teammates, setter Renata Dargan (2003-2006) and middle hitter Kim McConaha (2001-2004). The duo will find themselves on opposite sides of the net for the first time as professional players in Spain, as McConaha's Haro Rioja Voley team will take on Dargan's Caja Sur Volley squad in Superliga 2 action.

Dargan is in her first season as a professional player with CV Cordoba, which is also known as Caja Sur Volley. Dargan's team is 2-0 entering the third week of competition.

McConaha is in her third season as a professional volleyball player in Europe. She began her career in France in September of 2005, playing for the Melun Val De Seine La Rochette team. Last season, the Centerville, Ind., native played for Club Voleibol J.A.V. Olimpico in Las Palmas, Spain. She now resides in Haro, Spain, four hours north of Madrid, and is playing for Club Voleibol Haro, also known as Haro Rioja Voley.

McConaha is one of two Americans on her team. She recently reported that all is well in her new home.

"I'm living in a city called Haro," McConaha said via e-mail. "It is a small town, but I do believe it is larger than my small town in Indiana. The city is surrounded by mountains. I have yet to go scale a mountain, but it could happen in the near future. The team I am playing on is really good compared to last year's team, but not better than my first year's team in France.

"There is one other American on the team and she is my roommate. Her name is Sherri, and she is a character. It is always nice to her English in a foreign country. I am pretty sure I laugh more than I do sleep."

In the Superliga 2, teams play 18 matches, roughly one per week from October to March. Matches are best three out of five with games played to 25 points. CV Haro has a 1-1 record entering its Oct. 27 match. Fans wishing to follow McConaha's team can do so here, while those wishing to follow Dargan's squad can do so here.

Dargan, an AVCA honorable mention All-American in 2005, is the Purdue record holder for career assists with 5,871. McConaha, a first team All-Big Ten selection in 2004, owns the Purdue record for block assists with 382.

Both Dargan and McConaha were members of Purdue's 2004 squad, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round, after earning the Boilermakers' first tournament berth since 1990. Since then, Purdue has added two more tournament appearances to its tally, including back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2005 and 2006.
