WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Senior setter Val Nichol has been named Big Ten Setter of the Week after leading the No. 8 Boilermaker volleyball team to a 3-0 record and the Mortar Board Premier title on opening weekend. The honor is the first for the All-American since she garnered Big Ten Player of the Week accolades on Oct. 21, 2013.
Nichol led the Purdue offense to a .253 hitting percentage and four of her hitters to efforts of .375 or better on the weekend. The senior dished out 10.44 assists per set, while also managing 3.33 digs and 1.33 kills while hitting at a .524 clip and serving up a team-best five aces en route to all-tournament team honors.
In the opener against USF, Nichol led the Boilers to a .245 hitting effort besides getting nine different hitters in on the action. She also pulled up a team-leading eight digs and chipped in two aces.
The senior put together her first double-double of the year with 10 digs and 26 assists against #14 San Diego to go with four kills, two aces and a .429 hitting effort. In Set 3, she helped Purdue pull away from the Toreros, turning in a pair of kills and an ace as the team turned a 15-14 deficit into a 23-18 lead.
In the finale against LSU, Nichol nearly pulled off a triple double, posting a career-high 40 assists to go with 12 digs and six kills and a .750 hitting effort. In the sweep clinching third set, she went 3-for-3 offensively and served up an ace.
The Boilermakers (3-0) return to action on Friday when they face UNC-Asheville at the KSU Owl Invitational in Kennesaw, Ga.
