WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - With the regular season less than a week away, the Boilermaker volleyball team faced off in its annual Gold & Black Scrimmage on Saturday. The five-set event allowed coaches to mix and match the lineup and the players to show fans and parents the progress they have made during the offseason as well as during the two weeks of preseason camp.
The Black team took three sets: 25-22, 25-21 and 25-21, but the Gold managed a pair of 25-19 wins. The Gold team featured a pair of practice players and volunteer assistant Ryan Freeburg to up the competition level and allow more freedom for substitutions on both sides.
After the match, redshirt junior defensive specialist Blair Bashen discussed the team's scrimmage, the upcoming week of practice and the season opening Mortar Board Premier with purduesports.com.
Purdue kicks off the 2010 season at 7 p.m. Friday against Western Kentucky. The Boilermakers also will face off against Northern Iowa and Central Michigan at the six-match Mortar Board Premier. Matches are slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday and at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are available in the Purdue Athletic Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-49-SPORT.
