WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - With their male practice players in the mix, the Boilermaker volleyball team played a five-set match to the wire in the Gold & Black Scrimmage on Saturday.

The practice players, freshman setter Ashley Evans and a rotating lineup of backcourt players and hitters made up the Gold squad, while the Boilers tested various potential starting lineups on the Black side. The match went down to a 15-13 score for the black in the final set.

Head coach Dave Shondell said the competition allowed the team to see both positives and things to improve upon before the season.

Junior setter/outside hitter Val Nichol said the addition of the practice players will aid the team's development.

The Boilermakers will play one more scrimmage before the regular season when they face off with an all-star alumni squad on Aug. 24 at 6 p.m.
