WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Although its first match of the season is still over a week away, the Boilermaker volleyball team has moved up in the national rankings. The squad, which owned the No. 18 spot in the final CSTV/AVCA Coaches' Poll of 2006, garnered a No. 13 ranking in the 2007 Preseason Poll released on Tuesday.

The Boilermakers are one of five Big Ten teams ranked among the nation's top 16. Defending conference champion Penn State is No. 3, followed by Minnesota (No. 9), Wisconsin (No. 11), Purdue (No. 13) and Ohio State (No. 16).

Purdue was ranked among the nation's Top 25 throughout the 2006 season, peaking at No. 9 during the weeks of Oct. 2 and Oct. 9. The Boilermakers have been ranked in the AVCA poll for 29 straight weeks beginning on Sept. 19, 2005 and including all 16 polls in 2006. Both the 16-week season stand in 2006 and the 29-week current string are the longest in program history.

The Boilermakers will defend their No. 13 ranking when they open the 2007 season at the Duke Invitational in Raleigh, N.C. Purdue will face East Carolina and NCAA Tournament competitors Winthrop and Duke at the Aug. 24-25 tournament.

In 2006, Purdue made its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, including its second-consecutive Sweet 16 berth, en route to a 23-11 overall finish.
