WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker volleyball team extended its stay in the nation's Top 25 to 33 straight polls when the AVCA announced its preseason coaches' poll on Monday. Purdue is ranked No. 16 in the preseason listing, keeping the Boilers among the best in the nation since the Nov. 29, 2010 poll.
Purdue earned the No. 24 spot in that Nov. 29, 2010 listing and ended 2010 at No. 11. The Boilermakers spent the entire 2011 and 2012 seasons among the Top 25. In 2011, Purdue was among the Top 15 throughout the year, including two weeks at No. 8, before earning the No. 10 spot in the final poll. The Boilers started 2012 at No. 9 and moved up to No. 7 after opening weekend, marking the team's highest ranking since Nov. 14, 1983, and wound up the season at No. 15.
Six other Big Ten teams are listed in the poll: No. 2 Penn State, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 7 Michigan, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 14 Michigan State and No. 23 Ohio State. Illinois and Wisconsin also received votes, but did not break into the Top 25.
No. 4 USC and No. 21 Western Kentucky, both of whom the Boilermakers will face in the season opening Mortar Board Premier, August 30-31, were named to the Top 25. Purdue will take on Notre Dame, which received votes in the poll, at the Golden Dome Invitational in South Bend on Week 2.
Purdue is one of six teams in the nation that can boast six Sweet 16 berths in the last eight seasons.
The Boilermakers kick off 2013 against No. 4 USC at 7 p.m. on August 30 on Belin Court.
