MARIBOR, Slovenia - Throughout the Purdue volleyball team's European Tour, a different player will offer her perspective on the day's events. On Thursday, the Boilers traveled to Maribor, Slovenia, by way of Vienna, Austria, including a long bus trip. Sophomore Val Nichol gives her take on things from her room at a ski resort in Slovenia.
After being out on the town for our last night in Prague, none of us were ready to get up this morning, but we enjoyed another breakfast at Hotel Roma before departing for the capitol of Austria, Vienna. The bus trip was a little rocky and lasted an hour longer than planned due to increased traffic as we got near the city. However, the beauty of the city was well worth it. The city of Vienna was very different from Prague despite only being five hours apart. The architecture was still very detailed, but took on a more modern spin. A majority of the team enjoyed a slice of pizza for lunch before wandering around the town for an hour or so. This was no ordinary slice of pizza; it was a quarter of a whole pizza. And, of course, we had to get some gelato.
Following the exploring of the city, we all re-boarded the bus to the summer house (castle) of the Hapsburg family (the monarchs of Czech Republic and the Austrian empire). This building looked like the White House, but yellow. The botanical garden was absolutely stunning. The amount of time we got to spend there did not do it justice, but it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
After only 30 minutes, we loaded the bus back up and continued our journey to Maribor, Slovenia, where we will stay the next three nights. The landscape of Austria consists of rolling hills and a lot of greenery, very different from what we are used to in Indiana.
When we finally reached Maribor after a long day of traveling we enjoyed a really great meal consisting of spaghetti, potatoes, salad and roasted turkey. Even though most of us slept some of the bus ride, we are pretty tired from traveling. We are looking forward to spending the next few days in Maribor and competing against two national teams during our stay.
