WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker volleyball players took a break from spring preparations to give back to the community. Outside hitter Lisa Pierce, defensive specialist Blair Bashen and outside hitter Carrie Gurnell, aka the Spiking Spellers, participated in the 2009 19th Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy. The volleyball team also took time to help the staff at Food Finders sort household products.
The spelling bee, hosted by the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy (LARA), took place at Sunnyside Middle School. Members of the community were encouraged to participate with prizes being awarded to the winners. The spelling bee was a team-based event, unlike a traditional spelling bee. Each team consisted of three spellers. When a team was given a word, all three members were allowed to collaborate, but only one person could spell the word. Each team member rotated turns as the speller.
The Boilermakers are slated to play in four spring tournaments beginning on March 28. The team will play at home on Belin Court on both April 11 and 18 to wrap up the spring campaign.
