March 10, 2009

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After leading his team to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances including three Sweet 16 berths in the last six years, head coach Dave Shondell has been awarded a contract extension, which will keep him on the sidelines in West Lafayette through the 2014 season.

In 2008, the Boilermakers advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four years and posted a top five finish in the Big Ten for the third straight season.

That success has been noted by senior associate athletics director Roger Blalock, who is the sport administrator for volleyball.

"Dave Shondell has done a marvelous job of re-establishing the Purdue University volleyball program," Blalock said. "When he arrived here Purdue volleyball was the doormat team in the Big Ten Conference. In just his second year as the head coach, Dave had the volleyball program competing at a high level, and back into NCAA postseason tournament competition. Since then he has kept Purdue volleyball in the upper division of the Big Ten Conference and as a regular postseason contender, including five straight years in the NCAA Tournament. There is no doubt that he has Purdue volleyball on the right track"

Shondell said he continues to see a bright future ahead.

"I am extremely grateful to the administration at Purdue University for the support they've given to both our staff and student-athletes," Shondell said. "Purdue is a very special place and I look forward to watching our team improve - both in the Big Ten Conference and on the national stage. It has been exciting to see the crowds continue to grow at Belin Court and I appreciate the terrific support of our Purdue students and the Lafayette area community.

"This is a great time to be a Boilermaker and I am humbled to receive this support from Roger, Morgan (Burke), and President Cordova. Receiving another year extension on my contract is helpful in recruiting athletes who are looking for a program in which the head coach will be present during their entire playing career. I am so thankful to all the players who have contributed to our success over the past six seasons for allowing me this opportunity."

The Boilermakers are slated to play in four spring tournaments beginning on March 28. The team will play at home on Belin Court on both April 11 and 18 to wrap up the spring campaign.
