Boilermakers Women Lose Two Matches in Utah Classic
SALT LAKE CITY -- The state of Utah's slogan is ``The Greatest Snow on Earth,'' in
reference to its bountiful skiing.
On Saturday, Purdue found out the volleyball in the state is pretty good, as well. The
Boilermakers lost a pair of matches to Utah schools at the Utah Classic. Weber State, out
of Ogden, won 13-15, 15-7, 15-5, 15-11 in the afternoon and the host Utes were
victorious 15-8, 15-8, 15-3 in the evening.
The setbacks halted the Boilermakers' quick getaway to the 1997 season while dropping
their record to 6-3. Purdue, which defeated Southwest Texas State in three games Friday,
finished third in the tournament played at Crimson Court.
Utah (5-3) won the championship, while Weber State (6-4) finished as the runner-up.
Purdue's Kelly Colangelo was named to her second all-tournament team of the year (also
at the Florida State Classic, and she was the most valuable player of the Mortar Board
The Weber State match was interesting. In Game 1 the Wildcats appeared in control with
a 12-7 advantage before Purdue stormed back. The Boilermakers took their initial lead at
13-12 on the first of two straight aces by Colangelo.
It was more of the same the next three games with Weber State building big early leads.
Purdue no longer could overcome its own mistakes, though, and the Wildcats avenged a
five-game loss to the Boilermakers during the 1996 season.
Weber State outhit Purdue .329 to .173 and outblocked the Boilermakers by a 15-7 1/2
Katie Gibbons led the Boilermakers with 24 kills, while Colangelo had 18 kills and 12
digs. Sarah Emke recorded five blocks.
Purdue did not hold a lead in any of the three games against Utah, which blitzed the
Boilermakers with a .396 hitting percentage. The Utes also had 13 blocks and limited the
Boilermakers to just a .105 attack mark. Gibbond topped the team with 10 kills.
The Boilermakers conclude the non-conference portion of their 1997 schedule next
weekend against Atlantic Coast Conference toughies North Carolina and Duke in the
