Purdue Volleyball Swept At Ohio State
By Tom Schott
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State volleyball team served Purdue right off the court Wednesday night en route to a 15-7, 15-12, 15-6 victory at St. John Arena.
The Buckeyes, the top serving team in the Big Ten Conference, rifled 13 aces against the Boilermakers and made it tough on the Purdue passing game on numerous other occasions.
Vanessa Wouters, who leads the Big Ten in service aces, led the way with six, while Rose Snow had three and four others players added one apiece.
When Wouters wasn't serving tough, she was taking care of business offensively. She totaled a match-high 15 kills on a .577 hitting percentage and also recorded five digs and three blocks.
When the Boilermakers (9-15, 2-11) did return Ohio State's serves, their offense operated in high gear. Purdue hit a solid .327 as a team behind four players with double-figure kills: Kelly Colangelo, Sarah Emke and Connie Paul (11 each) and Bev Krupa (10). Paul and Colangelo attacked at .600 and .529 clips, respectively. Krupa came up with seven digs, as well.
Purdue, which is 0-8 on the road this season, also was hurt by 12 service errors, all in the first two games.
Both teams had trouble scoring at the start of the match as they exchanged 11 sideouts before the Boilermakers scored the first point. They later led 2-1 before Ohio State (18-7, 9-4) went on a 10-1 run to take control at 11-3. Four of the points came via aces, three by Wouters.
The Boilermakers regrouped and raced to an 8-2 lead in Game 2. It was 9-4 when the Buckeyes rallied again with five straight points to tie the score at 9-all. Purdue retook the lead 11-9, but Ohio State answered by scoring six of the next seven points.
Once again, the Boilermakers opened an early lead in Game 3, this time 6-1, but the Buckeyes did not surrender another point while picking up two more aces.
Former Purdue women's basketball player Jannon Roland, now playing professionally for the Columbus Quest of the American Basketball League, was in attendance at the match.
The Boilermakers next visit Michigan State (18-7, 8-4) on Saturday night at 7.
