Purdue Volleyball Falls to Michigan

While Penn State and Wisconsin have grabbed most of the headlines in the Big Ten Conference this volleyball season, Michigan quietly is making a name for itself, too.

Maybe not so quietly anymore.

The Wolverines (14-6, 7-2), whose only two conference losses have been to No. 1 Penn State and No. 8 Wisconsin, swept Purdue 15-8, 15-7, 15-3 on Friday night before 1,206 fans in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility.

With the loss, the Boilermakers dropped to 7-13, 0-9, leaving them within one defeat of tying the school record for consecutive setbacks set by the 1989 team.

"All week we practiced passing, passing, passing, but you wouldn't have guessed that tonight," Purdue coach Joey Vrazel said. "We are more error-prone than aggressive at times, but I guess that's part of being young.

"We're trying to find a way to stay in games longer and be competitive. We're going to continue to swing at the ball, that's all we can do, but we need to get everyone focused at the same time."

Senior Sarina Harris provided a bright spot for the Boilermakers with a season-high six kills and no errors in eight swings for a snappy .750 hitting percentage.

Purdue was led by Katie Gibbons' nine kills, while Sarah Emke and Bev Krupa both had six. Connie Paul had six digs and four blocks and Kelly Colangelo added five digs and three blocks.

Michigan, which got 14 kills from Karen Chase, outhit the Boilermakers .352 to .150 and rifled seven service aces. Purdue held a 7 1/2 to 6 advantage in blocks.

On Saturday, the Boilermakers play host to Northwestern (11-9, 2-7), which was swept at Ohio State 15-9, 15-13, 15-6 on Friday. However, the Wildcats took Penn State to five games before falling last Sunday.
