Colangelo Named September Female Athlete-Of-The-Month
Kelly Colangelo (Burbank, Ill., Reavis H.S.), a sophomore on the Purdue volleyball team, was named Purdue's Female Athlete-of-the-Month for her outstanding performances throughout September. The award is sponsored by WLFI-TV and Twin City Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth.
Colangelo helped the volleyball team to a 7-6 start and earned Most Valuable Player honors in one tournament along with two all-tournament team selections. At the Florida State Classic in Tallahassee, Fla., Colangelo averaged 3.44 kills along with six service aces to help Purdue win its first two matches of the season and place second in the tournament.
A week later, Purdue returned home for the Mortar Board Purdue Premier and Colangelo had even greater success. She led the Boilermakers to three straight wins and the tournament championship by averaging 4.36 kills per game with a .437 hitting percentage. She also averaged 2.09 digs to go with seven blocks and three service aces. As a result, she became the Boilermakers first tournament MVP since Carey Burvis captured the honor at the UTA/Asics Tiger Tournament in 1993.
Colangelo continued her string of strong performances at the Utah Classic in Salt Lake City. She averaged 3.80 kills and 2.50 digs per game to go with four blocks and three service aces. Against Weber State, she posted her first career double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs.
Although the season is only a month old, Colangelo has also set two personal bests. She had a career-high 24 kills against Indiana State and later that day hit at a career-high .500 clip (15-2-26) against Syracuse, both Boilermaker victories.
Purdue's next match is at Iowa on Oct. 3.
