WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University has signed Gretchen Haynor to become a member of the women's tennis team. The newest Boilermaker will join the squad in the fall of 2000 under head coach Mat Iandolo, who is excited about Haynor's arrival.

"Gretchen is a tremendous athlete who hasn't been involved in tennis for a long time, but has improved greatly due to an incredible work ethic," Iandolo said. "We look forward to helping take her game to the next level."

The Fairview, Pennsylvania native is a senior at the Out of Door Academy in Sarasota, Florida, where she is coached by Shelly Stone. The 17-year-old plans on majoring in pre-law and looks forward to attending the university.

"I really enjoyed the campus there," Haynor said. "The atmosphere was friendly and I think I will fit in well at Purdue."

Currently training at the Billy Stern Tennis Center, Haynor was the Middle State Junior Section Champion. She is among the top 80 players in the country, and attributes her success in tennis to her parents, Ed and Lydia Haynor.

"During the seven years I have been playing tennis, my parents couldn't have been more supportive," Haynor said. "I don't think I would have been able to make any achievements without my family."

Haynor has a younger brother Matt, and two sisters already in college. Lea attends Vermont, while Heather will be a Big Ten rival at Michigan State.
