INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - Silvia Ambrosio, a junior transfer from Marquette, makes her debut Wednesday in singles at the prestigious 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The newcomer is the first Boilermaker to compete in the event - previously called the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships - under Purdue head women's tennis coach Laura Glitz.
"Simply making it to nationals is a great achievement for a collegiate tennis player, but I'm here to earn a victory for Purdue," Ambrosio said. "I'm extremely proud to represent my new school, coach Glitz and my fellow Boilermakers."
Ambrosio is coming off of a 3-0 performance last weekend at Georgia State's Piedmont Invitational - the most recent in a series of dominating outings this fall. She leads the team in singles at 12-1 overall, which includes a 6-1 mark at regionals, where she qualified for this week's tournament.
"I decided to transfer to Purdue because I wanted to improve my level of play and also make an impact on the program. I would not be at nationals, though, without the help of my coaches and team."
Despite the stellar record at a variety of high-profile events, Ambrosio will face her toughest competition yet this season in the first round. The Boilermaker opens play against No. 3 Ashley Lahey of Pepperdine, the number two overall seed.
"Going into my first match, I'm thinking about what I've been practicing since I first arrived at Purdue," Ambrosio said. "I want to focus on my own plan and maintain control of the match.
"I've never played against Ashley, but I know what I have to do. It'll be a competitive match."
Wednesday's first round includes 62 other players vying for a spot in Sunday's final. Matches are played at either the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa or the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Live scoring via Tennis Ticker will be available at both site locations, while TempuZ will provide live streaming coverage from two courts at the later.
