Miami Invite Draw
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team will face its toughest competition of the fall season at the Miami Invite Friday - Sunday in Coral Gables, Fla. Six players listed among the ITA's preseason rankings will battle in two 16-player singles draws and four of the top-30 doubles teams will be featured in two eight-team draws. Three teams will take part in the tournament in addition to Purdue and host Miami: Auburn, Ole Miss and NCAA Division II Barry (Fla.).
The Orange Doubles draw will be tightly contested with four nationally-ranked teams, including the 12th-ranked Boilermaker duo of Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany. Schmidt and Kapitany were awarded the No. 1 seed and open against Elisabeth Abanda and Kimmy Twelker of Barry Friday at 9 a.m. ET. Daniela Vidal and Lynda Xepoleas square off against 24th-ranked Caroline Rohde Moe and Marija Milutinovic of Ole Miss. The Nos. 23 and 27 doubles teams are also in the draw.
Freshmen tandem Andjela Djokovic and Natalia Davila, along with Nicole Robinson and Claudia Escribens are in the Green Doubles draw, which also begins Friday at 9 a.m.
Singles play is set for an 11 a.m. start on Friday. Schmidt, who is ranked 125th, will lead the way for Purdue in the Orange Singles draw. Her first opponent will be one of her foes from the opening doubles match, Twelker of Barry. Xepoleas, Vidal and Robinson have also been placed in the draw that is loaded with four top-85 players.
For the Boilermakers in the Green Singles draw it will be Kapitany, Djokovic, Davila and Escribens.
Friday's schedule has doubles playing the quarter and semifinals and the Round of 16 in singles. Doubles championships and place matches are on Saturday, as are singles championship and consolation quarter and semifinals. Finals and place matches will be contested on Sunday.
The Miami Invite comes on the heels of the Yale Invite, a round-robin tournament held Oct. 4-6, where Purdue battled singles matches against Boston College, Yale and Iowa. Vidal led the way by etching out a pair of wins. After dropping the first set to Yale's Ree Ree Li, 6-4, the junior from Maracaibo, Venezuela, took control of the match and claimed victory, 6-2, 6-3. She also took down Katie Zordani of Iowa in straight sets, 6-5, 6-5. Vidal's wins came in the Nos. 3 and 2 spots, respectively.
Picking up the marquee win for the Boilermakers was Xepoleas, who knocked off No. 88 Annie Sullivan of Yale in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-1. Robinson, Escribins and Djokovic also emerged victorious in singles action. Escribens and Djokovic each won in straight sets (6-2, 6-4; 6-1, 6-3), while Robinson took Boston College's Jenny Ren to three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles competition, Purdue finished with a 5-2 mark, meeting teams from Yale, Dartmouth and Brown. Xepoleas teamed with Vidal at the No. 1 spot for a pair of wins. They defeated Sullivan and Li from Yale, 8-5, and Brown's Hannah Camhi and Dayna Lord, 8-4.
Against Yale, Escribens and Davila went down to the wire with Hanna Yu and Caroline Lynch for an 8-7 (4) victory. Escribens then paired with Robinson for matches against Dartmouth and Brown, winning both, 8-4 and 8-3, respectively.
