Sept. 27, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women’s tennis team will split this weekend and travel to the IU Invitational and the ITA All-Americans. Six individuals will travel to Bloomington, Ind., while two others will head to Los Angeles.

The group heading to IU will be led by sophomore Daniela Vidal. Vidal will be making her second appearance of the fall along with Krisztina Kapitany. Both competed at the Duke Fab Four Invite two weeks ago. Seniors Imogen Golder and Gisella Pere will make their season debut as well as freshmen Claudia Escribens and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum.

The weekend tournament will consist of four flights of singles play and one flight of doubles play. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday. The Boilermakers will be joined by Colorado, Kansas State, Notre Dame, and Indiana. Former Boilermaker assistant coach Roberto Aspillaga now holds the same position with the Buffalos. A complete schedule of the tournament can be found at the bottom of the page. Draws have not yet been released.

Mara Schmidt and Lynda Xepoleas will compete in the ITA All-Americans, the first Boilermaker women to do so since 2006. Both will play in the singles pre-qualifying round and are then scheduled to compete in doubles despite the fact that the two have never played together. Both women will try to advance through the pre-qualifying round into the qualifiers. Then, the after playing in the qualifying rounds, the two would play in the main draw if they are able to advance that far.

Schmidt and Xepoleas both played in the Duke Fab Four Invitational earlier this fall and had moderate success. Schmidt took third in the Blue Division while Xepoleas lost in the consolation final against a ranked Duke sophomore.

Full results and a recap can be found at following completion of each day for both tournaments.
