WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its 2012 preseason rankings on Friday and one Boilermaker found herself in the rankings. Sophomore Lynda Xepoleas is ranked No. 121 in the country following an outstanding freshman season.
Xepoleas finished her freshman season with a 16-10 record with all but one of her matches coming at the No. 2 singles position. The other match came at No. 1 where she was victorious against Kentucky. Xepoleas not only had an outstanding rookie record, she also came through in several clutch situations. The high moment of the year came when Xepoleas forced a third set tiebreaker against the nation’s No. 15 team, Michigan, in the Big Ten Tournament Championship. The Boilermakers were tied 3-3 in the team score and Xepoleas trailed late in the third set. However, the then-freshman rallied back and won the set giving Purdue its first Big Ten Championship in program history.
Xepoleas also had wins over two ranked singles players, aside from her win over the No. 85 player in the country Brooke Bolender in the Big Ten Championship. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native also knocked off the No. 94 and No. 117 ranked individuals last season.
Xepoleas and the Boilermakers are scheduled to begin the fall season with the Duke Invitational on Sept. 14-16 in Durham, N.C.
