WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its preseason polls on Friday and the Boilermakers have a ranked individual and doubles team. Mara Schmidt earned a singles ranking while she and Krisztina Kapitany are among the best doubles pairs in the country.

Schmidt earned the No. 125 singles ranking after playing the 2012-13 season at the Nos. 1 and 2. She went 15-9 in singles and played her best tennis at the end of the season. The senior knocked off Melissa Kopinski of Illinois, the No. 109 ranked singles player in the country to wrap up the regular season. Schmidt followed up that performance with a win over the No. 94 singles player in the country, Jaklin Alawi of South Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to help Purdue win, 4-3.

Schmidt and Kapitany earn the highest ranking of any kind for a Purdue woman or team as the duo is ranked No. 12 in the country. Schmidt previously had the record with Jennifer Rabot as the duo was ranked No. 13 during the 2010-11 season. Schmidt and Kapitany went 16-10 last season in doubles and earned a berth in the NCAA Doubles Tournament, the first Purdue pair to do so since 2000. The duo picked up the highest ranked win of any kind in Purdue history as it knocked off the No. 2 doubles team in the country, Bolender and Bektas from Michigan. Schmidt and Kapitany won eight straight matches from Feb. 24 to March 30, including the win against Michigan and three other top-60 victories.

The Boilermakers are scheduled to open their fall slate on Sept. 20 at the Michigan Fall Invite. Three freshmen Boilermakers may also have the opportunity to make their debuts at the tournament.
