WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt begin the NCAA Doubles Championships on Thursday against a top-eight seed in Champaign, Ill. The No. 27 duo in the nation will take on Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama at a time yet to be announced.
Kapitany and Schmidt have a dual match record of 12-9 this season. The duo won eight-straight matches from Feb. 24-March 30th including a victory over the then-No. 2 doubles tandem in the nation. Kapitany and Schmidt defeated five teams that are currently ranked including four which qualified for the doubles tournament. The duo has played 11 matches against teams in the tournament since last fall. The Purdue duo defeated an Alabama duo during the fall at the Duke Fab Four Invite. Schmidt and Kapitany defeated Emily Zabor and Natalia Maynetto 9-8 (4) on Sept. 14.
The Purdue pair is the first doubles team to qualify for the NCAA Doubles Tournament since 2000 when Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny did so. Kapitany and Schmidt are just the fourth duo in program history to make the tournament and the only one that did not include Embry as she qualified three times in doubles as well as once in singles. No Purdue doubles team has ever won a match in the doubles championships.
The 32-doubles-team bracket begins on Thursday with one round each day until the championship match on May 27. Once the match time is announced, it will be posted on the Purdue women's tennis schedule on PurdueSports.com.
