WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 31st-ranked Purdue women's tennis team is for its in-state showdown against No. 44 Indiana Friday in Bloomington. The dual match between the 5-4, 1-1 Big Ten Boilermakers and the 11-4, 0-1 Big Ten Hoosiers is slated for a 3 p.m. ET start from the IU Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available here.
Purdue enters Friday's match on the heels of a 5-2 win over then-No. 36 Illinois on its home courts on March 9. The Boilermakers captured the doubles point for the fifth time this season, improving to 3-2 overall when they capture doubles. Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany cruised to an 8-1 victory, pushing their record at the No. 1 spot to 9-3. Daniela Vidal and Natalia Davila moved to 4-1 at No. 2 with an 8-4 win. The four singles victories were registered by Vidal, Schmidt, Kapitany and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum.
Thanks to their thrilling upset of the then-No. 30 duo of Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett of Northwestern on March 1, Schmidt and Kaptiany returned to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's doubles rankings issued Tuesday at No. 31. It is the third time they've appeared on the list during the 2013-14 season. Released on a bi-weekly basis, the Boilermaker tandem were absent from the Feb. 25 rankings after previously being listed at No. 51. They were tabbed 12th in the preseason poll released on Sept. 6, 2013.
Indiana split a pair of matches in its last outing on March 8, dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 41 DePaul, followed by a 7-0 shutout of IUPUI. The Hoosiers have held 10 of its 15 opponents scoreless, surrendering just one point in a 6-1 win over Marshall on March 1. The favor was returned however in their first Big Ten match of the season in a 7-0 loss to then-No. 8 Northwestern on Feb. 20.
Sophie Garre is the only ranked player on the Indiana roster, checking in at No. 109. The senior has played throughout the lineup, with matches at the Nos. 1-4 positions.
