WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 20 Purdue women’s tennis team opens up its spring break trip on Thursday with its first of two weekend matches. The Boilermakers will face Winthrop at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday and Florida International noon on Friday at in Miami.
Purdue (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten) is coming off a conference win last week against instate rival Indiana. The Boilermakers beat the Hoosiers last weekend, 5-2, at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Purdue has won six-straight matches including five on the road. The team has defeated five ranked teams of the six it has faced.
Mara Schmidt has been excellent all season. She boasts a 6-2 dual match record all at No. 2 singles. Last week, she clinched the match against the Hoosiers with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Gisella Pere boast undefeated dual match singles records. Bernard-Feigenbaum is 6-0 at No. 4 while Pere is 7-0 at No. 6. The Boilermakers have a ranked doubles pair this week. Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany check in as the No. 38 duo in the nation.
Winthrop is 5-8 on the season and is on a two-match skid. The Eagles fell to No. 1 North Carolina 7-0 on March 2 before falling 6-1 to No. 52 Georgia State. Purdue and Winthrop have a common opponent in Marshall. The Boilermakers defeated the Thundering Herd 6-1 while the Eagles lost 4-3. Yasmine Alkema has played the majority of the season at No. 1 and has a 6-6 dual match record at the position. Alice Garcia and Giovanna Portioli share the best singles records for the Eagles. Both are 8-5 this season.
Florida International enters its match against Purdue with a 2-9 record. The Panthers have dropped three straight including a 5-2 decision to Michigan State. Carlotta Orlando leads the Panthers with a 7-3 dual match record including 5-2 at the No. 1 spot. Florida International is off until it hosts Purdue on Friday.
