Maggart Advances to Final
Quebe, Cohen and Moran Play for Fifth Place
COLUMBUS, Ohio--Mary Beth Maggart, a senior on the Purdue women's tennis team, defeated Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso in the semifinals of the No. 1 singles flight of the Ohio State Bruegger's Invitational today (Oct. 11). After dropping the first set in a tie breaker, Maggart rallied for a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory en route to the championship match tomorrow (Oct. 12). Maggart, the 38th-ranked player in the nation, will challenge Martina Nedelkova of Virginia Commonwealth for the title.
"Mary Beth played very well today," coach Mat Iandolo said. "She dropped that first set but she pressed on. Her resilience and poise really showed in the last two sets."
Three other Boilers will play for fifth place in their respective flights, as will the doubles team of Maggart and sophomore Jennifer Embry. Freshman Erika Quebe, who won a singles title in her collegiate debut at the Notre Dame Eck Classic Oct. 5, won two matches today to advance through the back draw of the No. 2 singles flight. She lost her opening round match Oct. 10, but rebounded with two three-set victories today. Quebe will play Emily Smith of Cincinnati for fifth place.
Senior Hally Cohen and junior Katy Moran find themselves in a similar position. After dropping their first round matches, both Cohen and Moran won twice today to put themselves in contention for fifth-place finishes in their respective flights. Cohen will face Olga Fedotova of Eastern Michigan in the No. 4 flight, while Moran will challenge Rice's Jane Trinh in the No. 5 flight. The doubles team of Maggart and Embry proceeded in the same fashion through the No. 1 doubles flight, and will play Notre Dame's Dossa-Velasso for fifth place tomorrow. Also in doubles, Quebe and sophomore Shannon Taheny advanced to the semifinals of the No. 1 flight before bowing out in a tough 9-7 loss to Georgia Tech's Jenkin-Ursulet duo. Cohen and junior Laura Avgerinos won two matches in the No. 3 flight to advance to the semifinals.
Competition in the tournament will conclude with championship play tomorrow (Oct. 12).
