WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - All good things must come to an end. The Purdue women's tennis team's eight-match Big Ten win streak came to a halt today when the Boilermakers dropped their last conference dual match to Minnesota 6-1 on the Varsity Courts in West Lafayette. Purdue's record now stands at 13-8 overall and 8-2 in the Big Ten. The eight conference victories mark the most ever in the 22-year history of the program. Despite the loss, the Boilermakers will hold the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Championship tournament to be held April 30-May 3 in Madison, Wis. Wisconsin owns the top seed with a 9-1 conference record.
Things looked good from the get go, as Purdue won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead with the doubles point. Unfortunately, the Gophers were able to turn the tables in singles play, winning all six matches to erase the early deficit and come away with the victory. Senior Hally Cohen and freshman Erika Quebe had their matches stretched to three sets before falling, while senior Mary Beth Maggart, sophomores Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny and junior Laura Avgerinos all dropped straight-set decisions. Cohen moved up to No. 5 singles, while Avgerinos filled her vacancy at No. 6. Freshman Lisa Walgenbach, who had gone 9-0 in the Big Ten at the No. 5 position, did not play due to injury.
The Boilermakers will receive a first-round bye in the conference tournament and will face the winner between the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds on May 1. The official seedings will be released on April 27. The Boilers, whose highest conference finish ever was fourth place in 1995, placed seventh in 1997.
