WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Eight straight. The Purdue women's tennis team knocked off Iowa 6-1 at the Lafayette Sports Center today to win its eighth consecutive Big Ten match and improve its conference record to 8-1. The Boilers, who are now 13-7 overall, will play Minnesota in their final regular season dual match tomorrow. A win over the Golden Gophers may give Purdue a No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Championship tournament which will be held April 30-May 3 in Madison, Wis. Today's victory over Iowa guaranteed the Boilermakers at least a No. 2 seed. Purdue got started early by winning two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Going into the match, Purdue coach Mat Iandolo believed that point would be a major factor in the outcome of the contest.
"Getting that doubles point allowed us to play a little looser in singles and that made a big difference in how we played," said Iandolo. "It was abig momentum boost."
The Boilermakers used that early 1-0 advantage to spark their singles play, as Purdue won five of six individual matches to cruise to victory. Sophomore Jennifer Embry was the first Boilermaker off the court with a straight set win over Emily Bampton at No. 2. Freshman Erika Quebe was next with a two-set decision over Shera Wiegler at No. 3. Senior Mary Beth Maggart sealed the deal with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 against Natalya Dawaf, and sophomore Shannon Taheny and freshman Lisa Walgenbach followed with three-set wins. Walgenbach, who downed Carolina Delgado 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, remains undefeated (9-0) in Big Ten play.
The Boilermakers take on the Gophers at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Varsity Courts. In case of inclement weather, the match will begin at 11 a.m. at the Lafayette Sports Center.
