WEST LAFAYETTE, La. - The Purdue women's tennis team earned its fourth consecutive Big Ten victory by knocking off Illinois 5-2 at the Lafayette Sports Center today. The Boilermakers improve to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten.
Purdue got off to a positive start, claiming the doubles point after winning all three matches. The Boilers took that 1-0 lead into singles, where senior Hally Cohen kept things going with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Lisa Panique at No. 6. Classmate Mary Beth Maggart was next off the court with a straight-set victory of her own. Freshman Lisa Walgenbach was a straight-set winner, as well, while sophomore Jennifer Embry needed three sets to pull out a victory at No.2.
The Boilermakers are in the hunt for a high seeding at the regular season-ending Big Ten Tournament to be held April 30-May 3 at Wisconsin. A win over Penn State, who comes to town on April 12, would only enhance Purdue's chances leading into its final four conference matches. The match against the Nittany Lions is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Varsity Courts but will move indoors to the Lafayette Sports Center in the case of inclement weather.
