The Purdue women's tennis team fell 7-2 to 24th-ranked Kentucky today at the Varsity Tennis Courts in West Lafayette. The loss evens the Boilermakers' record at 7-7 (3-1 Big Ten). It appeared as though Purdue might have a shot at the upset, as four Boilermakers won their first sets in singles play. But the Wildcats quickly turned the tide, forcing three-set matches at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 positions. After surrendering those precious second sets, the Boilermakers could not hang on, as theydropped all three of those matches and a two-set affair at No. 6.
The biggest bright spot on the day was the play of sophomore Jennifer Embry, who took care of Kelly Brown 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. Embry and senior Mary Beth Maggart, the 30th-ranked doubles pair in the nation, lost 8-4 to the 24th-ranked Emami/Brown duo at the No. 1 slot. Purdue's second point came in doubles following a default by Kentucky's No. 3 doubles team. Purdue gets back to action April 7 against Western Michigan at home, and resumes Big Ten action when it hosts Illinois on April 9 and Penn State on April 12.
