MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Purdue women's tennis team lost a close 5-4 decision at 45th-ranked Marquette today. The loss drops Purdue to 6-6 (3-1 Big Ten).
The Boilermakers, who brought a season-best three-match win streak into Milwaukee, won four singles matches behind freshman Erika Quebe, sophomore Shannon Taheny, freshman Lisa Walgenbach and senior Hally Cohen, but were unable to pull out any doubles matches which proved to seal their fate. The 30th-ranked doubles pair of senior Mary Beth Maggart and sophomore Jennifer Embry came closest before falling 9-7 to the 17th-ranked Golden Eagles' duo of Elisa Penalvo and Ana Fernandez.
Quebe, Taheny and Walgenbach have won four straight singles matches dating back to a 6-1 upset over Big Ten defending champion and then 28th-ranked Michigan on March 21 in Lafayette. Purdue returns to the court onApril 1 with a match at Miami of Ohio before hosting Kentucky and Western Michigan on April 4 and April 7, respectively.
