WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Make it three in a row for the Purdue women's tennis team. The Boilermakers stretched their win streak by dominating Illinois State 8-1 at the Lafayette Sports Center today. The victory improves Purdue to 6-5 (3-1 Big Ten). This is Purdue's longest string of success in the 1998 dual match season.
"This was a good match made easier by the fact that we came out and played with incredible confidence and took it to them from point one," said Purdue coach Mat Iandolo.
Purdue began the match by winning all six singles matches in straight sets. In six individual matches, the Boilermakers surrendered a mere 16 games to their Redbird opponents. SeniorMary Beth Maggart, freshman Erika Quebe, sophomore Shannon Taheny and rookie Lisa Walgenbach all picked up their third consecutive singles victories, while sophomore Jennifer Embry and senior Hally Cohen got back on track with wins of their own.
Purdue's success carried over to doubles, where Maggart and Embry were victorious, as was the pair of Taheny and Quebe. The duo of Cohen and junior Laura Avgerinos were the only Boilermakers to come up short, though just barely, as it fell 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.
The Boilermakers have little time to rest, as they travel to Milwaukee for a match with 45th-ranked Marquette tomorrow (March 28). Marquette's Elisa Penalvo is the 28th-ranked player in the nation, while Penalvo and Ana Fernandez make up the 17th-ranked doubles team in the country.
