WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team continued to roll with a 5-2 win over Michigan State today at the Lafayette Sports Center. This is Purdue's second straight win and gives the Boilermakers a Big Ten weekend sweep after having upset 28th-ranked and defending Big Ten champion Michigan on March 21. The win against the Spartans evens Purdue's overall record at 5-5 and ups its conference record to 3-1.
"We felt like this was a good win for us, coming on the heels of a win over Michigan," said Purdue coach Mat Iandolo. "It was a good win for different reasons, also. We did a very good job of adjusting to a match where we had everything to lose and nothing to gain. The pressure was squarely on us, and it's good to come through in that kind of situation."
Once again, quality doubles play sparked the Boilermakers. Purdue claimed the all-important doubles point by winning two of three matches with senior Mary Beth Maggart and sophomore Jennifer Embry, along with the tandem of sophomore Shannon Taheny and freshman Erika Quebe, picking upvictories.
The Boilermakers went on from there, winning four of six singles matches to emerge victorious. Maggart, Quebe, Taheny and rookie Lisa Walgenbach all won in the Nos. 2-5 positions. Embry lost a fierce battle at the No. 1 spot, and senior Hally Cohen came up on the short end of the stick at No. 6.
The Boilermakers look to extend their streak to three when they host Illinois State on March 27 at 1 p.m. On March 28, Purdue welcomes 48th-ranked Marquette. The Boilermakers are currently 41st in the nation.
