WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Bring it on. That seems to be the battle cry for the Purdue women's tennis team, which annihilated defending Big Ten champion and 28th-ranked Michigan 6-1 at the Lafayette Sports Center today. This is the second upset the Boilermakers have pulled off in conference play this season, after having knocked off No. 22 Northwestern 4-3 on March 1. Purdue, now 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten, is ranked 41st. It is the first time in eight years Purdue has beaten Michigan and fifth time ever in the history of the program.
"Once again, this is a huge win for our program to defeat the defending Big Ten champion handily," said Purdue coach Mat Iandolo. "It's also a big win because they're ranked 28th in the nation and it should put us in good shape for apossible bid to the NCAA Tournament."
Purdue began the upset by claiming the doubles point, winning two of three matches. Senior Mary Beth Maggart and Jennifer Embry won 8-4 over the Wolverines' Hart and Lund at the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Shannon Taheny and freshman Erika Quebe downed the Moon and Boylan pair 8-1 at No. 2.
The momentum carried into singles, with Purdue winning all but one of six matches. Rookie Lisa Walgenbach and senior Hally Cohen were the first to pick up victories, and a win by Taheny sealed the deal. Quebe and Maggart then followed with victories of their own. The lone Boilermakers to suffer losses against the Wolverines was Embry in singles and the No. 3 doubles team of Walgenbach and junior Katy Moran.
Purdue has little time to celebrate the win. The Boilermakers return to the court for a match against Michigan State at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Lafayette Sports Center.
