The Purdue women's tennis team posted its biggest win in school history when it knocked off 22nd-ranked Northwestern by the score of 4-3 in Evanston today. This win, the first ever for Purdue over Northwestern (22 attempts), brings Purdue's record to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten.

"This is the biggest win in the history of Purdue women's tennis," said Purdue coach Mat Iandolo. "We feel great about it. It was a great team effort, with No. 3, 4, 5and 6 coming through and Hally Cohen winning the clinching point."

The favored Wildcats won three matches to win doubles point for an early 1-0 lead. Purdue entered singles play needing four victories for the upset, and delivered it in the bottom portion of the lineup. Sophomore Erika Quebe won her No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-4 over Colleen Cheng, while sophomore Shannon Taheny picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win against Laura Guignon at No. 4. Rookie Lisa Walgenbach won her second straight match with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Jennifer Lutgert at No. 5, but it was Cohen who delivered the knockout punch for the Boilermakers. The senior No. 6 player for Purdue, Cohen battled after being a set down for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Leigh Weinraub, which lifted the Boilermakers to the upset.

"Everyone played their guts out today," said Iandolo. "Yesterday we lost to 25th-ranked Wisconsin, so being able to regroup and refocus against such a tough Northwestern team is real impressive. I couldn't be prouder of our team. This win should give us a lot of confidence going into the rest of our season."

The Boilermakers are on break until March 12 when they play at Pepperdine. Their next Big Ten matches, both at home, are March 21 against Michigan State and March 22 against defending conference champion Michigan.
