Purdue Women's Tennis Posts Big Win Over Drake

Boilers get first win of season.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Purdue women's tennis team won its first match of the season in decisive fashion, handing host Drake a 7-0 loss in Des Moines, Iowa, today. The Boilermakers are now 1-3 with all three losses coming to top 20-ranked teams.

Purdue got on board first by winning two of three matches to win the doubles point. The Boilermakers cruised after that, winning all six singles matches. Senior Mary Beth Maggart won her first match of the year by downingMarianne Motte 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Jennifer Embry collected her third win by knocking off Amy Hanson 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Erika Quebe made quick work of Daria Kotchoubinskaya, defeating the Bulldog 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. Sophomore Shannon Taheny needed three sets to beat Rajasree Kuruvilla 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. Rookie Lisa Walgenbach defeated Bridgette Komasincki 6-0, 6-3, and senior Hally Cohen beat Emma Edvardsson 6-3, 7-5.

Maggart and Embry teamed up for an 8-6 win over Hanson and Kuruvilla in doubles, while Quebe and junior Katy Moran won 8-3 against Kotchoubinskaya and Aleksa Huns. The lone loss suffered by the Boilermakers came to Walgenbach and senior Laura Avgerinos in the No. 2 doubles slot. They fell 8-6 to the Motte-Edvardsson combo. Purdue has two weeks off before it hosts Auburn on Feb. 15 at noon.
