January 24, 1998

The Purdue women's tennis team lost its season-opening match against South Alabam 7-2 in Mobile today. The Jaguars are ranked 17th nationally, while the Boilermakers are 50th.

"It's tough to start off the season 0-1, but South Alabama is a very strong team," said Purdue coach Mat Iandolo. "They are the type of team we need to play to improve, and I think that we certainly learned a lot from this match."

Picking up wins for the Boilermakers were senior Hally Cohen and the doubles team of sophomore Shannon Taheny and freshman Erika Quebe. Cohen defeated Tracey Gobey 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 6 singles position. Taheny and Quebe beat Goutefarde and Puflerova 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles spot.

Senior Mary Beth Maggart pushed her No. 1 singles match against Lenka Jakabekova to three sets before falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Taheny lost her No. 4 singles match against Gaelle Goutefarde in three sets, as well.
