Senior Day/Cancer Awareness Day vs. Northwestern Friday, at Illinois Sunday

The women's tennis team wraps up the regular season this weekend.

The Purdue women's tennis team has hired Ric Mortera as its assistant coach in July 2012. Mortera comes to Purdue from the University of Illinois where he was the women's volunteer assistant coach.

Mortera was with the Fighting Illini for the previous two years. With his help, Illinois reached a season high rank of No. 18 and an NCAA Tournament berth. He also assisted six players in reached ITA individual rankings in either singles or doubles. The team also had five All-Big Ten selections.

Mortera also has worked as a WTA Tour coach for the last year and a half. He has served as the coach for former United States Fed Cup player Alexa Glatch as well as the 2009 Orange Bowl Champion Julia Boserup. Under Mortera's direction, Glatch's ranking improved from No. 302 in the world to No. 139. The ranking of 139 includes a qualifying run into the main draw at Wimbledon in singles and a main draw appearance at the US Open in doubles. The newly appointed Boilermaker assistant also helped Boserup reach a career-high ranking of 174.

Prior to his coaching days, Mortera was a four-year letter winner in tennis at the University of California and the University of Oregon. As a sophomore, he led the team in dual match singles victories. He also attained a ranking of No. 45 in ITA doubles by his senior year.

As a junior tennis player, Mortera was consistently ranked in top 20 in the United States, reaching a high of number six. He was also rated the number one player from the Pacific Northwest region.

Mortera graduated from the University of Oregon in June 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in economics as well as one in political science. He was a part of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 Oregon men's tennis teams that achieved the highest GPA among male sports teams in the department.
