Maggart Bows to 10th-Ranked Webb in First Round
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Mary Beth Maggart, a junior on the Purdue women's tennis team, fell to third-seeded Vanessa Webb of Duke 6-0, 6-3 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships today.
Maggart, Purdue's No. 1 singles player, was ranked 48th in the last ITA/Rolex Collegiate Tennis Rankings, while Webb was ranked 10th. In addition, Webb's Duke team is ranked third in the nation. An All-Big Ten honoree, Maggart finishes the 1996-97 season with a 28-15 record.
Purdue's 1996-97 season is now complete as Maggart was the only Boilermaker representative at NCAAs. Purdue finished with an 8-15 record (4-8 Big Ten) and placed seventh in the final Big Ten standings.
