WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.--Shannon Taheny (Barrington, Ill., Barrington H.S.), a sophomore on the Purdue women's tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete-of-the-Month for her performances throughout March.

Taheny went 5-1 in March and has won four in a row at the No. 4 position. She began the month with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Laura Guignon in a 4-3 upset over then 22nd-ranked Northwestern. Despite a setback in her next outing, a 7-5, 6-2 loss to 31st-ranked Karoline Borgerson of No. 14 Pepperdine, Taheny perservered and has since been on a tear, winning her last four. She knocked off Michigan's Erryn Weggenman in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to help the Boilermakers topple the Big Ten defending champion and then 28th-ranked Wolverines 6-1 in West Lafayette on March 21. On March 22, Taheny defeated Jaime Tannenbaum of Michigan State 6-2, 6-3 to help Purdue to the 5-2 victory. Taheny beat Illinois State's Jennifer Liepa 6-3, 6-0 in an 8-1 win on March 27, then rallied from a set down to defeat Sara Fernandez of Marquette 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a 5-4 loss.

The Boilermakers, who posted a 4-2 record in the month of March including upsets of two top 30-ranked teams, are now 6-6 (3-1 Big Ten). Their next match is April 1 at Miami (Ohio).
