WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Members of Purdue's women's swimming and diving team recently helped collect donations for the Salvation Army's Sharing Is Caring Drive.

The Boilermakers volunteered to ring the iconic bells at the Tippecanoe Mall earlier this month as holiday shoppers rushed to fill the wish lists of family and friends.

The team was amazed by the number of donations that poured in during its four-hour shift.

"Many of the women were surprised at the amount of money so many people deposited in the red bucket," said assistant coach Darlene Renie. "It made us proud to see the outpouring of generosity in our community for such a worthy cause."

Boilermaker head coach Cathy Wright-Eger spearheaded her team's involvement after speaking with a Salvation Army representative through a Rotary Club meeting. The representative noted the Sharing Is Caring Drive is the organization's biggest money maker.
