COLUMBUS, Ohio - It was a record-setting weekend to punctuate the fall season for the Purdue women's swimmers at the Ohio State Invitational, a three-day meet that featured nine new program records established by the Boilermakers.
Freshman Rhiannon Sheets led the way with seven new program benchmarks. The Carmel, Ind., native won the 100 (53.80) and 200 butterfly (1:56.67) with program-record times that obviously doubled as Purdue freshman records. But the newcomer also excelled in the freestyle sprints and finished the weekend having set new freshman marks in the 50, 100 and 200 free.
Sheets' finished her 50 free head-to-head swim-off with teammate Carly Mercer in 23.12. Mercer, a sophomore transfer from Arkansas, posted a personal season-best time of 23.03 in the same race. Meanwhile, Sheets also established new freshman records while leading off the Boilers' top-performing 400 and 800 free relays. She finished her leg of the 400 free relay in 49.82 and the leadoff leg of the 800 free relay in 1:48.11.
Lauren Roth (500 free, 4:42.12) and Emily Fogle (200 breast, 2:10.32) also set new school-record times while winning their events.
Meanwhile, a number of Boilers improved their standing on the program's all-time top times list with their performances in Columbus. Those highlights and times are listed below.
Purdue will continue to train for the second half of its season. A Jan. 14 home meet against Michigan State, a double dual meet featuring the men and women, marks the beginning of a busy second half.
