Complete Sunday Men's & Women's Results >>> Purdue Highlights & Team Scores
COLUMBUS, Ohio – New school records from Emily Fogle (200 breast) and Rhiannon Sheets (200 fly) highlighted the final day of the Ohio State Invitational for the Purdue swimming teams. The Purdue men finished second of four, the women third of five.
Sheets established her second new school record of the weekend, setting a new program benchmark in the 200 butterfly 24 hours after also posting a new record in the 100 fly Saturday. Fogle, meanwhile, eclipsed her own school record in the 200 breaststroke from a season ago. Including Lauren Roth’s 500 freestyle record from Friday, the Purdue women set four new individual school records this weekend.
Sheets and Fogle also won their record-setting events Sunday. Sheets eclipsed Carlene Takaki’s 200 fly record (1:58.09) from 2007 in both the morning preliminaries and again in the finals. She finished the prelims in 1:57.58 and bested that time by nearly a second with a showing of 1:56.67 to win the A final.
Fogle won the A final of the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.32, lowering her school record by a quarter of a second. She improved on her morning prelim time by four seconds.
The winning times for Sheets and Fogle were two of the nine NCAA provisional qualifying times posted by Boilers on the day.
Lyam Dias won the 200 breast with an NCAA provisional time (1:57.63) that doubled as a meet record, highlighting the final day of the three-day meet for the Purdue men. The freshman’s time ranks as the fourth fastest in program history.
Megan Gallagher also posted an individual victory Sunday, winning the 1,650 free with the third-fastest time (16:28.83) in program history.
Along with Dias, Fogle, Gallagher and Sheets, NCAA provisional qualifying times came from Lauren Gustafson (100 free), Lauren Roth (200 fly), Jan Petric (1650 free), Brian Kiel (200 back) and Eduard Galdeano (200 fly).
The Purdue women’s 400 free relay team of Sheets, Gustafson, Roth and Carly Mercer eclipsed the meet record while finishing second to Ohio State by half of a second. The quartet finished in 3:18.75, the third-fastest time in program history.
The men’s 400 free relay team of Matt Friede, Ben Ziolkowski, Ben Wachtel and Danny Tucker also took second to OSU with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:58.76.
The Boilermakers will continue with their regular practice regimens but are not scheduled to compete again until mid-January. Both teams will host Michigan State Saturday, Jan. 14 for the final home dual meet of the season. Selected members of the men’s team will also travel to Dallas the weekend of Jan. 13-14 for the prestigious Classic at SMU.
