WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - An 11-time All-American for Pennsylvania's Bethel Park High School, Sarah Dunleavy recently signed her National Letter of Intent to swim for the Boilermakers.
Dunleavy's primary events are the breaststroke and individual medley. She lists her top short-course yardage times as 1:05.36 (100 breast), 2:23.99 (200 breast) and 2:04.63 (200 IM).
"Sarah is a versatile athlete loaded with potential," said Purdue assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Darlene Renie. "She will be able to make an immediate impact in the IM and breaststroke events as a Boilermaker. We most certainly feel that Sarah's best swimming is ahead of her. Sarah's competitive spirit and positive attitude will add to the strength of the Purdue team."
Dunleavy is currently in her second year as a team captain for the Bethel Park Black Hawks, for whom she has won 12 medals at states and 10 district gold medals. She was the state runner-up in the 200 IM as a sophomore and again in the 100 breast as a junior.
Bethel Park has won three-consecutive district titles with Dunleavy as well as two state runner-up crowns in 2006 and 2007.
Dunleavy also competes for the Bethel Park recreational swim team, which has won three major titles over the last two years, including the 2007 Spring USA Nationals and the Spring Junior Nationals.
In December of 2006, Dunleavy competed in the 200 IM at the U.S. Open, which took place at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. She later raced in the 200 IM and 50 free at this year's U.S. National Championships.
Dunleavy, a writer for her school's newspaper, also has been rewarded for her academics. She is a two-time USA Scholastic All-American and member of the National Honor Society.
Dunleavy lists physical education as her intended major. Her hobbies include running and spending time with family and friends.
Both her parents are graduates of West Virginia University and her brothers, Michael and Matthew, played collegiate football. Michael is a graduate of Yale University. Matthew was a senior tight end for Amherst College this past season.
