WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's latest catch from the deep waters of the Lone Star State is Kristen Gilson, who's coming all the way from Plano to swim with the Boilermakers.
The backstroke is Gilson's specialty, but she can also handle the 200 freestyle and individual medley.
"Additional depth in the backstroke events is what this Purdue team needs, and that is what we can expect and more from Kristen," said assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Darlene Renie. "Her greatest strength lies in the backstroke events, but I foresee her fulfilling an important role in the freestyle events as well. Kristen could be a key relay leg in the 800 and the 400 free Relays. Kristen is a very hard worker who is ready to meet the challenges of NCAA D-I competition."
Gilson currently competes for Plano Senior High School as well as the City of Plano club team. She swam with Patriot Aquatics from 1996 through 2002.
Gilson's Plano Senior teams have not lost a dual competition since she joined the team in 2004 and have clinched three-straight regional and district championships, starting in 2005. Plano Senior placed fourth with Gilson at states in 2005 and 2007, and were state runner-ups in 2006.
A two-time high school All American, Gilson is a three-time state qualifier in the 100 back and with the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. She helped set a high school record with the 200 free relay en route to the 2007 state finals.
Gilson's athletic accomplishments also include a 2007 regional title in the 100 back and being part of the Girls' Relay of the Year (200 free) as a sophomore.
A two-time junior national and 2006 U.S. Open qualifier, Gilson is co-captain of this season's high school team and is a four-year member of the National Honor Society. She has served as treasurer for Habitat For Humanity in addition to earning high school All-American status on two occasions.
Gilson, whose hobbies include arts and crafts, baking, running and road biking, says she chose the Boilermakers for their close family atmosphere and is impressed with the team's determination to succeed.
