Ohio State Invitational Wrap Up

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Carly Mercer and Casey Matthews both established a new record for Purdue women's swimming and diving at the three-day Ohio State Invitational and have now been honored by the Big Ten conference office for their performances.

Mercer was recognized as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. Matthews was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week for the first time since February 2009, which was her freshman season.

Mercer was also part of a Swimmer and Diver of the Week sweep for the Purdue women at this time last season. She teamed with Maddie Miskulin to take home both weekly honors after the 2012 Purdue Invitational. Prior to last year, the Purdue women had not swept the Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards since November 2006.

Mercer also becomes the first Purdue woman to be recognized as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week twice in the same season since Lisa Dolansky in 2001-02. Marissa Watts was the Big Ten Swimmer of the Month twice in 1995-96.

Matthews established a new Ohio State Invitational meet record (371.60) Friday while winning the finals of 3-meter diving. She went on to sweep the springboard events with a victory from the 1-meter board Saturday.

Mercer eclipsed the program record in the 100 freestyle (48.43) while finishing as the runner-up in the A final of the event Sunday. She qualified for A finals in all four of her individual events en route to accounting for 56 team points as Purdue's top individual performer. She posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 50, 100 and 200 free as well as the 200 IM. The senior moved up to third place in program history in the 200 IM and fourth place in the 200 free. She continues to rank third in the 50 free.

Matthews won three of the four rounds of competition in which she participated at the Ohio State Invitational. She posted Purdue season-best scores in the 1- and 3-meter finals. The senior jumped from seventh in the prelims of the 1-meter to the event winner after improving her score by 48 points. The reigning 3-meter NCAA champion has won five springboard events over the last three meets.

Samantha Feulner, Tracy Glaser and Mercer are the active Boilers to win Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week during their careers. Matthews joins Michelle Cabassol as women's divers recognized this season for Purdue.
